Joe Calzaghe - Former World Champion Professional Boxer
Joe Calzaghe CBE, born 23rd March 1972 is a former Welsh professional boxer. Calzaghe, sometimes referred to as 'The Pride of Wales' retired from boxing in 2009 after a long and successful career.
Calzaghe was the first person to be awarded the Freedom of Caerphilly in 2009 and even has a footbridge named after him and his father Enzo. The 'Calzaghe Bridge' officially opened in 2009. “We are honoured to have this landmark structure named after us and we hope the whole community will enjoy the benefits of the bridge and the new links it has created.” (Joe Calzaghe)
The Manic Street Preachers
The Manic Street Preachers are one of the most significant rock bands ever to emerge form Wales. They came to the limelight in the late 1980's, starting in 1986 with heavy eyeliner and strong political views. All members of the band are from the small former mining town of Blackwood in Caerphilly Borough and are still famous 20 years later.
The band has also not forgotten their Ffili roots with them recently backing and donating to the Wales National Mining Memorial in Senghenydd. "They may be international rock stars, but home is evidently where the heart is for these local boys." - Chairman of the Aber Valley Heritage group
Simon Weston - Falklands Hero
Simon Weston OBE was a soldier in the Welsh Guards and burns survivor from the Falklands war. Born in Caerphilly in 1961, he grew up in Nelson, a small village in the borough of Caerphilly, and joined the Welsh Guards, aged 17, in 1978.
"In 1982 I was aboard the Sir Galahad when it was destroyed at Bluff Cove in the Falklands Islands. I suffered 46% burns to my body and went on to have numerous operations. However, I was one of the lucky ones. I survived." – Simon Weston
In 1992 Simon was awarded an OBE for his charity work across the years and recently in the 2016 New Years Honours received a CBE for his charitable work.
Simon has gone on to write many children books with the main character called Nelson, recalling his home town and the stories are based in Wales.
Luke Evans - Hollywood Actor
Luke Evans was born in the small town of Aberbargoed, in the Rhymney Valley and has since gone on to become a very successful actor in the film industry.
Luke has been in many of London's West Productions before he made his big break in the 2010 film Clash of the Titans. Since then he has been in popular films such as The Hobbit, Fast and Furious and was the main character in the 2014 film Dracula Untold. He is set to be playing Gaston in the new Disney film Beauty and the Beast.

Also showing his support to small independent cinemas when he was at the Maxime Cinema in Blackwood, while speaking to WalesOnline he stated that people really need to support our small independent cinemas rather than the big chains.
Matt Johnson - TV Presenter
Matthew Alan Johnson is a Welsh television presenter and personality from Caerphilly. He is best known for presenting in the interactive 'Hub' on ITV's This Morning between 2010 and 2013 and co-hosting the Channel 5 show OK's TV.
Matt along with Alex Jones, recently kicked off the Urdd Eisteddfod in Caerphilly in 2015. With the man himself saying "I'm very proud to be here as a Caerphilly boy and to see all the bunting up in the area, on Nantgarw Road where my parents still live, it is a wonderful feeling and an honour to be here."
Aaron Ramsey - Footballer
Aaran, born in Caerphilly has become a very popular Arsenal Football player. The Caerphilly boy was signed to Cardiff City at the age of just 8! Aaron has now worked his way up to Captain of Wales football team and was signed to Arsenal in 2008.
Nathan Cleverly - Boxing Champion
Nathan Cleverly is from Phillipstown, New Tredegar is another one of Caerphilly's famous Boxing Champions. He is a former WBO light heavyweight champion, having also held the European, British and Commonwealth light heavyweight titles.
Nathan Cleverly stated he is the "first Welshman since Freddie Welsh in the 1910′s to have won Commonwealth, British, European and world titles."
