Built on the site of the former Elliot Colliery, the museum’s centre-piece is the original Victorian winding engine, which runs on the last Saturday of every month. This enormous piece of machinery gives you an insight into what it was like to work in the South Wales coalfield, right down to the engine oil and coal dust. Exploration of the winding room will take you on a deep-dive into the history of the Elliot Colliery and the importance it held in the local community.
Discover the hidden history of South Wales in our West Gallery, where you’ll find an exhibit of the stars of our collection. From Romans to Revolutions, Castles to Cavaliers, and the Iron Age to the Iron Works, there’s lots to see, do and explore!
Our West Gallery tells the story of South Wales through the histories of ordinary people. We encourage visitors to engage with history through touching, smelling and playing with our interactive exhibits. The stories we tell in this gallery are for all to share, so you’re welcome to bring the whole family to enjoy exploring the history of the area.
Our East Gallery features a changing programme of fascinating exhibitions each year. Including exhibits from Welsh artists and creatives, local education and community projects and showcases of our museum collection, you are sure to find something appealing in our exhibition programme.
